The Ness team were saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Anna Ritchie – a major figure in Scottish archaeology.

Dr Ritchie was probably best known in Orkney for her excavation of the Pictish/Norse settlement at Buckquoy, Birsay, the Knap of Howar in Papay and the Holm of Papay North chambered cairn. She also co-directed the excavation at Skara Brae in 1972/73 and was married to Graham Ritchie, who excavated at the Stones of Stenness in 1973/74.

She was the author of numerous guidebooks, undoubtedly introducing many to the prehistory, history and archaeology of Scotland.

Our thoughts go to her family and friends at this sad time.
