Sharing the results of Ness geophysics project in free online seminar

Geophysics preliminary resullts 2025

Following last summer’s geophysics work at the Ness of Brodgar, project lead Paul Durdin will be sharing the results in a free online seminar on Wednesday, October 28.

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the 2025 geophysics project was a two-week programme to complement the ground-penetrating radar work carried out by Time Team. It saw the entire Ness excavation site resurveyed using modern, high-resolution techniques, offering a level of detail far beyond that available when the site was first surveyed a quarter of a century ago.

Led by Paul Durdin, the goal was to reveal archaeological features beyond the excavated trenches and refine our understanding of the site’s overall layout. The surveys produced a wealth of new data, shedding fresh light on the extent of the Ness complex and highlighting features that remain hidden beneath the surface.

In this seminar, Paul will outline the methods used for the survey, explain how geophysical techniques help archaeologists investigate buried archaeology without excavation and discuss some of the project’s most significant findings.

The talk will be delivered via Microsoft Teams and begins at 6.30pm. Attendance is free and everyone is welcome.
