Festive flashback – winter at the Ring of Brodgar

As I write this, there’s a light dusting of snow covering Orkney’s West Mainland.

It’s been quite a few years since we had a major covering of snow – December 2010, I think, when the entire country was affected by snow and ice for almost a month!

From the late 1990s until the mid 2000s, snowfall was relatively common – certain more so than I remember in the years previous.

It was on one of those occasions, that these photographs were taken. Although the main roads were passable, side roads were blocked and the police were advising people not to travel. We had been snowed in for days at this point, so I decided to tackle the 6km between my house and the Ness of Brodgar by bicycle…

…I never did it again.

But before we look at the photographs, all the Ness team would like to thank everyone for their support over what has been a very difficult year for us all. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Sigurd
