The 31st annual Orkney International Science Festival begins today, Thursday, September 2, and runs until September 8.

On Sunday, September 5, the Dr Raymond Lamb Memorial Lecture is entitled The Ness in Rock and Stone and outlines some of the insights gained from the study of finds from the site.

Dr Martha Johnson highlights the rocks that don’t fit the local geology, and shows clues to their origins, while Ann Clarke looks at the stone tools and their uses and users.

The session also features Dr Antonia Thomas, from the University of the Highlands and Islands Archaeology Institute, who will detail the main themes emerging from research on the carved and incised stones.

The talk, which is hosted by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, premieres online from 5pm until 6pm (BST) and available here thereafter.
