Visit the 2017 dig

The Ness of Brodgar dig covered to protect it when we're not digging - sleep tight little site, we'll be back in July!

Visiting the Dig - Individual visitors

Individual visitors and family groups are very welcome - there will be FREE site tours from Monday to Friday at 11am, 1pm and 3pm - no need to book, just turn up. The site tours will start on Wednesday 5th July and run until Wednesday 23rd August 2017.

The diggers will be on site from Monday to Friday (weather permitting) apart from Friday 14th July and Friday 18th August. There will also be no 1pm tour on these two Fridays.

On Saturdays and Sundays there will be no diggers to see, but there will still be free site tours at 11am & 3pm (but NOT at 1pm) - again just turn up.

Please note however that the  site is CLOSED & there will be NO site tours on Orkney's County Show Day, Saturday the 12th August 2017.

Two Special Open Days will be held on Sunday 16th July and Sunday 20th August from 10.30am to 4pm when the diggers will be on site and there will be demonstrations and activities for all the family.

There is free car parking space at the dig on a grass field, please note vehicles are left at owners risk. The entrance to the dig field is very narrow and is NOT suitable for large vehicles such as camper vans - please park at the Standing Stones or Ring of Brodgar car parks and walk to the site.

The walk through the World Heritage Site from either the Ring of Brodgar or Stones of Stenness is very pleasant and is recommended to anyone with the time.

Please note there is no parking in any of the passing places on the Brodgar road and you must not park in any of these places - Police Scotland patrol the road regularly and may well issue you with a parking fine if you are found parked illegally!

Commercial Tour Group visits

For logistical & health & safety reasons, we regret we can’t take commercial tour groups on any of our regular public tours. Please don’t just turn up with a group and join a public tour - we will have to turn you away.

If you would like to bring a large tour group (more than 8 people) and you have your own guide, then you are welcome to visit independently but you will need to avoid the public tour times and any other booked groups, so please contact us well in advance by email so we can coordinate your visit  - click here to contact us    Small tour groups of 8 people or fewer are welcome to just turn up without booking but please do try and avoid clashing with the public tours due to pressure on parking space.

We will do our best to help but it may not be possible to allow your group to visit so the sooner you contact us the better.

Coach parking

Please note that there is no parking for coaches or midi coaches at the Ness of Brodgar and coaches must not be left in the passing places on the Brodgar road. Coaches will need to drop passengers off at the site entrance then go and park elsewhere.

Visitors are welcome during the dig season, but please note that it is not possible to visit or see the site outside of this period, as the site has to be covered to protect it from the Orkney weather. This is what the dig looks like when we're not there:

We are pleased to announce that the 2017 excavation dates are confirmed as Monday 3rd July until Friday the 25th  August.

It takes us a little time to unwrap the site and clean it up ready for digging to commence, so public access starts on Wednesday 5th July and we are then open until the Wednesday the 23rd August 2017.  Please consider  making a donation, or buying the Guidebook to help fund the dig!
