Farewell Bryn . . . you will be missed by all

Bryn – in his usual position, overseeing Trench P. (Jo Bourne)

(Jo Bourne)

We are very sad to announce, after battling a long illness, the passing away of Bryn, the director’s site dog and the real director of the Ness.

He will be missed by us all, and by all the visitors to the Ness who he met and greeted in his own special way.

Bryn would be there in the morning to greet diggers. He patrolled the site throughout the day – keeping us safe from the attention of nefarious swans and accursed drones – pausing at his favourite haunts to watch activities on site.

When you needed to find site director Nick, you just looked for Bryn – well, except for those times our canine friend had decided it was time for a well-deserved rest at his special area outside the sample bucket store.

And when it was time to stow the buckets, wheelbarrows and shovels, he was always there ready to  bid farewell.

We talk about the magic of the Ness often.

Bryn was as much a part of that magic as the finds, the archaeology and the people…

This writer, in particular, will miss his company on our daily site tours. When Bryn got up and left, it was clear I’d been talking too long.

Sleep well dear friend, you touched the lives of many.

We will all miss you.
