University board recommends closure of Sheffield archaeology department
University of Sheffield archaeology staff and students were informed yesterday that the university executive board are recommending closing the department and retaining certain areas of research and teaching.
We were shocked and very disappointed to learn the department remains under threat.
Numerous Sheffield students and alumni have been involved in the Ness of Brodgar over the years and the loss of this excellent department would, we believe, have a serious impact on British archaeology.
The executive board’s proposal will be considered by University Senate on June 23, before a final decision is taken by the University Council on July 12.
The campaign launched to try and stave off the threat is continuing and we would urge anyone interested in archaeology to get involved.
