Prehistoric pottery sessions on offer

Mike Copper, with his superb pottery reconstructions, at a Ness Open Day.

If you fancy trying your hand at some prehistoric pottery, you’ll get the chance at the Ness this summer.

On Thursday, July 19, and Thursday, August 2, Neolithic pottery specialist, and Ness of Brodgar stalwart, Dr Mike Copper will run two sessions — an introduction followed by a more in-depth session.

Running from 10am until noon on both dates, Introduction to Neolithic Potting is suitable for novices and families and will see you create and decorate your own Neolithic pot using prehistoric techniques. This session costs £10 for adults and £5 for children.

The Beyond the Basics sessions (1pm-4pm) will provide a more in-depth look at Late Neolithic Grooved Ware pottery, its styles, significance and technology, combined with the chance to make and decorate your own pot. This session costs £25.

As places are limited, booking is essential and will be on a “first come first served” basis. To book, email Mike at mcopper@mac.com, stating which session you would like to attend and the number of adults/children attending.

These sessions will take place outdoors (though under a shelter) and access will involve crossing an occasionally muddy field. As such, please come well prepared for the weather on the day. Toilet and washing facilities will be available on site but we are unable to provide refreshments.
